It’s summer! And for most people, summer means vacation time! A time to relax, explore, take time to visit loved ones, shop, and become balanced. I have heard it said that after a vacation another vacation is needed to get one’s energy back to get ready for work.  So before you fill up the car with gas or reserve your plane tickets, you might want to try a different destination this year. There are many places that you can go that will renew your spirit giving you a sense of balance while heightening your energy level so when you come home you are ready for anything. In this beautiful country we have many places that are calming to the nerves.

This summer, we will take a cross country journey together. We will start at the west and work our way to the east coast stopping along the way at some spiritual, haunted and soulful places. So grab your sun block, your bathing suits, a bottle of water and fasten your seatbelts, it’s gonna be a one of a kind road trip you are sure not to forget!

Stop #1 – Las Vegas, Nevada

I wanted to start with a place I’m sure everyone has heard of, yet is not known for its spiritual energy – Las Vegas, Nevada

For starters, I have to say that I have never seen so many people praying in one place before! Las Vegas is a place that encompassed the world on one strip of land. You can go to the Pyramids of Egypt and the Lady of Liberty in New York – and take a ride on the canals of Venice.  One of the most calming sights is flying in or driving into Las Vegas at night.  It is so beautiful all lit up glowing in all its glory.  People from all over come with high hopes of winning big and dreams of retirement and a life of luxury! The bingo halls are full of people with all kinds of lucky charms, from little Buddha’s to rabbit feet, they encircle their bingo cards with the charms in hopes of hitting a full card bingo. Unfortunately, the reality is, most visitors leave with empty pockets but lifelong memories of “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” But if you are one of the lucky ones, congrats!!!

Gambling is only one part of the Vegas experience – the shows are extraordinary, the food is fabulous, and if you want to tie the knot and get married there are many chapels to do so.  Although one might not think that Las Vegas is a spiritual place it has its merits on that path.  When my father died he came to me in a dream all dressed up in a white jump-suit like Elvis would wear and he was standing by a big white stretch limo. I asked him what he was doing and he told me he had a lounge act in Vegas. Well, in a few weeks I packed up the house and moved to Nevada where I found that my calling in Buddhism was going incredibly strong. It was a very spiritual experience one I still carry with me to this day.
